Surfing
When visiting the Algarve, you will most certainly spot a surfboard or two stacked on airport trolleys, on top of cars, balanced on a motorbike (yes really!) and of course, in the water. It is safe to say that Portugal is Europe’s top surf destination.
With optimal conditions throughout much of the year, the Algarve boasts huge unspoilt beaches, and just a 20 minute drive away from Praia da Luz, the wild west coast is a Mecca for surfers from all over the world. The Algarve also has something else which makes it as popular as it is: a wave guarantee. Being exposed to the Atlantic Ocean on both the west and south coast, you will be able to find waves here almost 365 days per year and that is something almost no other destination in the world can guarantee!
Surf lessons
If you have never surfed before, surf lessons are a must. With the help of an instructor, you will not only learn faster but be safe as well. With breaks suitable for beginners right up to expert level it's the perfect place to test your skills or give it a go with one of the locally based surf schools. Most schools will offer 1-day courses for those of you who just want to give it a try but if you want to really get the hang of it, full courses are what you need. The most popular are the 3-day courses where you really will get the hang of this fabulous sport! All the surf schools we work with pick you up right outside the reception so no need for a car or to worry about where to go or how to find the perfect waves!
Surfboard and wetsuit hire, transport and lessons can be arranged for you by reception so please pass by and see us for more details and booking!
Alternatively if you do have your own surfboard or longboard, then these can be stored in the alleyways at the apartments. We have fresh water hoses right outside many apartments so hosing off the sand is easy!
How about Kite-Surfing!
Alvor Lagoon, one of Europe's hotspots for kite-surfing, is only a 20 minute drive from the Luz Beach Apartments and can be booked at reception. This is a three day course and wind dependant but an exhilarting and exhausting challenge!
